The 1983 Ford Thunderbird Turbo Coupe was a rear-wheel vehicle with a motor located at the front and a two-door coupe bodyshell. The Turbo Coupe's final year was 1988, which only had minor changes in its design as the last significant changes were in the 1987 model. Changing the design to improve the aerodynamic performance made the 1987 model appealing, and it became an instant classic.

The 1987 Thunderbird Coupe got a makeover that gave it a sleeker design that stood out by getting rid of the boxy headlamps and squares that most people were used to. Some minor design changes occurred in 1986 as we saw the FILA model's deletion and the addition of a center high mount stop lamp. The introduction of the distinctive blue paint and stripes happened in 1985, and the tail lamps and grille were all revised. The modified headlamps and dual electric remote controlled mirrors were also features that made it unique. One of the 1984 Thunderbird Coupe's outstanding features was a leather-wrapped steering wheel with optional fingertip speed control. Even with the auto and lower-powered engine this one looks like a capable and fun cruiser. In 1984, as mentioned above, a FILA model was introduced, which included a unique interior, unique paint, and new wheel choices. Later versions added an intercooler, and when paired with a 5-speed manual had up to 190 HP. Factory rated at 155 HP, these cars moved pretty well for the time even with this car’s 3-speed automatic option. Under the hood is a turbocharged, non-intercooled 2.3 liter (140ci) Lima four. There’s no word on functionality, but well preserved cosmetics may bode well for the rest of the car. These cars were seen as very modern for the times, at least by contemporary Ford standards, and equipment includes dual power seats with adjustable knee, bolster and lumbar support, power windows, locks, a sun roof, cruise control, tilt column and other luxuries. Trim looks complete, sheet metal straight and paint finish looks to remain in good shape as well. Note the deck lid spoiler, exhaust tip and OEM wheels. These have mostly disappeared, but were pretty popular when new–this one’s bodykit isn’t like any we’ve seen before, and excluding the weird asymmetrical grille it actually works here pretty well. The non-intercooled Lima 2.3 made around 15 HP more than even the next-highest trim V8, and Ford employed Jackie Stewart to demonstrate that chassis enhancements meant the Turbo Coupe could handle as well. The interior is loaded with “nearly all the options,” and the 155 HP turbocharged 2.3 liter four feels “surprisingly powerful.” Find it here at Memory L ane Classics in Portland, Oregon for $6,950. The car displays ~68k claimed-original miles, wears a very 1980’s bodykit and overall displays what looks like excellent condition inside and out. This 1985 Ford Thunderbird Turbo Coupe is claimed to have always been garaged and pampered.
